We are exploring dinosaurs till mid of the month and we get to use our Playmobil dinosaur sets!
BOOKS ABOUT DINOSAURS
These are the books Vito and I are reading for Dinosaur exploration. We actually have A LOT of dinosaur books because Mavi is still obsessed with them but I consider those books too advanced for Vito. The books here are child friendly, contains a few text describing each dinosaur and are more interactive (Dinosaur First Discoveries).DINOSAUR FACT CARDS
I made a short summary and description for the dinosaurs that Vito and I are using. His favourite dinosaur figures are those from our Playmobil sets. So the cards are for matching and for me to use to describe each dinosaur. He likes the Playmobil sets because he can move some of their body parts like neck, legs, mouth and tail.
If you are interested, you can download a copy of the cards FROM HERE FOR FREE.
DIG AND SORT DINOSAURS
Mavi and I did this activity when he was 4 years old and I wanted to try this with Vito. The objective here is for him to dig and discover the dinosaurs and sort them out with the the fact sheets I printed for him. I buried the dinosaurs (Safari LTD Dinos Toob) in colored sand and rocks (I used salt with Mavi). Again, this is just some impromptu activity where I just dumped everything in a small container. He’s not fond of dinosaurs yet, so he seldom asks me what’s the name of the dinosaur he discovered. He was just there seated and doing his work, and I try not to intervene so I won’t disrupt his concentration.
Once he got all the animals out, we washed his hand and sorted out the dinosaurs. These are fact sheets which I printed a long time ago. The fact sheets tell us whether the dinosaur is herbivore, carnivore, or omnivore. Vito is not yet in the stage of understanding this, so instead of using the “scientific terminologies”, I just used “eat leaves, eat egg/dinosaur, eat anything”.
He enjoyed matching and sorting the dinosaurs though. I’m surprised that he’s able to match the animals despite the cartoonish images in the sheets.

DINOSAUR TEN FRAMES
We love our Learning Resources Mini Dino Counters, Set of 108 so I made Vito these ten frame cards so we can practice 1:1 correspondence and counting. He unexpectedly used the Montessori Large Wooden Number Cards to match our cards.I love Learning Resources’ counters! We use them in so many ways! You can check how we color sort the dinosaurs here and use them for small world play.
This Dinosaur Ten Frames is a FREE printable which you can download from here. I put dots on the frames for control of error.
WEIGHING DINOSAURS
I bought a mechanical scale the other day for Mavi’s math activities but Vito was curious with it too. I showed him how to use it even though he can’t read the scale yet. He enjoyed putting the dinosaurs in and out of the scale and watching the arrow move.DINOSAURS SMALL WORLD PLAY
Of course, our dinosaur unit wouldn’t be complete without our small world play! We took these Playmobil sets from Mavi’s room and made it available for Vito to use. In case you want to know, these are the Playmobil sets we are using:- PLAYMOBIL Volcano with Tyrannosaurus (Trex and Ankylosaurus)
- Playmobil Stegosaurus
- PLAYMOBIL Explorer and Triceratops with Baby
- PLAYMOBIL Brachiosaurus with Baby
- PLAYMOBIL Dimetrodon Playset
The playsets are so beautiful! We love the realistic landscapes, trees, ferns, and of course our volcano! And Vito’s favourite is the Playmobil Stegosaurus that includes 3 dinosaur eggs!
