It always excites me to introduce new things to Vito. Our recent activity is learning about plants, specifically in this post, the parts of a plant. I love doing plant study with the boys. I’ve been doing this with Mavi since he was 2 years old, and I love doing it all over again with Vito! Printed materials used in the activities were all homemade, and some were used during Mavi’s preschool days. This is Vito’s second year of plant study, and you can read related studies here:

PARTS OF A PLANT
Do you want to make learning about plants more engaging for your child? I have a suggestion that might help. Recently, I used a dead plant in our yard to teach my son Vito about the basic parts of a plant, especially the roots. As roots are not visible most of the time, we examined each part of the plant carefully. I showed him where the roots, stem, leaves, and what he calls "dead flowers" are located. Let's make learning about plants hands-on and exciting for our children!
When I showed him the roots, he said "there's a lot, Mommy." We looked in all corners of the soil and he could see roots everywhere.
The name of the book we are using as a reference is missing. This book is our favorite, and I highly recommend it. It covers topics such as roots, stems, and flowers and even includes a discussion on photosynthesis. You can see Mavi using this book five years ago.
In this part of the activity, I assisted Vito in matching the parts of the plants to our control cards. The 3-part cards that depict the different parts of the plants were acquired from our shop. However, we used only the control and picture cards since Vito is not yet able to read. For reference, I also have Mavi's parts of a plant study from 5 years ago.
We discussed the functions of each part and also looked at our vase with flowers. I explained how the stems act as a drinking straw, collecting water from the vase and delivering it to the plants/flowers.
NEEDS OF A PLANT
If you check my Instagram account, you'll see that I've been teaching Vito how to care for plants for months now. Through this, I've made him aware of the three basic things that plants need: soil, water, and sunlight.
