[REPOST] Continent: Australia
Now the materials I made were: the maps, flags, postcards and stamps. I also skipped printing the currency because my son isn’t interested with it at the moment.
My son also created the Australian flag out of cardstock (with a little assistance from me). He knows by heart the number of stars on the flag LOL.
I printed cards for the landmarks and foods in Australia. We were supposed to make Pavlova, but since we’re not really a fan of sweets and pastries, I rejected the thought of making it in order to save time and money :) Instead, we made BBQ ribs!!
Also, I made control cards for the animals in the Safari Toob Down Under for matching game. You can download it from here. Images were googled and if you wish to share it, kindly redirect them to my blog or on this post for the link. Thank you!
We plot the animals on the map where they’re mostly seen in Australia.
The next time we do Australia, I promise to add more materials and age appropriate activities. For now, I think these are okay :)

Artist Study ~ Vincent Van Gogh (Starry Night)
We concluded our Van Gogh study with Starry Night. We previously had Sunflowers and my son had a wonderful time painting like Vincent!
We discussed about the colors. With Sunflowers we were using bright colors... with Starry Night we're using darker shades like blue, violet and black.
I also paint with him :)
Here's my son's Starry Night rendition :)
Next would be either Seurat or Mondrian. I'm hoping we could do a lot of Artist Study before the school starts this fall.
I wonder what have you been doing this summer?
Have a nice day!

Artist Study: Vincent Van Gogh
We're doing Vincent Van Gogh this week. I plan to give "art lesson" every week till the school starts to keep the little one busy as we decided not to let him join Summer Camp this year.
We have this wonderful book as our reference.
First project: painting Sunflowers like Van Gogh
Learning how to use big brushes for backgrounds and we talked about the different "strokes" in painting.
Here as seen on the picture below, I let him talk about the colors Van Gogh used in his painting.
For painting objects, we used small brushes.
His and hers :)

Animal Figures and Cards
Oh how much my son loves these!! He loves to sort all our figures according to continents or arrange them alphabetically. Now I made these pocket containers for my continent cards (animals) according to their Montessori color code.
I got my figures from Safari Toobs and Schleich . I place everything on a basket and my son would just sort them accordingly.
Here's how they look like, showing 5 animals per continent.
Each continent set has 11 animals on it and my mission this year is to complete my figures so I can have all the animals representing each continent.
Continent animal cards and other FREEbies are available at Pinay Homeschooler Shop and Downloads.

Botany Unit: Seed
Because is school is finally over and we're enjoying days of cuddling and story telling, I almost forgot to post our Seed Unit.
So here are my materials: Seed Nomenclature cards and Booklet, mung seed sprouts and other sample of seeds.
First we made mung beans sprout. This is an excellent way of showing little ones how beans turn into plants.
We "harvest" the sprout and dissected it. The only problem with mung beans is that they're so tiny!
The 3 part cards. I have to say that we've been doing nomenclature cards for 3 yrs and it helped a lot in my Mavi's reading.
Matching seeds. The containers are from a Beauty Travel Kit which I got from a Euro store.
Now how I wish they all looked different! LOL.
Mavi was so happy when he saw the little leaf inside the bean. A perfect way to show him the epicotyl (embryonic shoot).
Introduction to dicots and monocots. This is an quite advance topic and I know it will be hard for him to grasp the idea as of the moment. So I just showed him that the mung beans are dicots because it has 2 cotyledons. To demonstrate, I made him dissect the beans and he said "Oh yes, there's two of them!".
Worksheets. This is his favorite part. He loves coloring and writing the the labels of each part. These sheets are included in The Seed Pack.
And that's how we go about our Seed Unit :) As of the moment, we're on a homeschool-break... you know just doing random stuff at home like painting, arts and crafts, legos and watching kid-friend movies and animation. Next week we'll have Ocean and Marine Animals.
