This week, Vito and I are exploring beginning letter sounds through objects we can find at home. This is very similar to the Alphabet Sort Montessori Inspired activity, but in our case we are not sorting the objects yet. What Vito and I are doing is to just name or identify the objects and match them to our control sheet.
Letter Gg: grasshopper, guitar, goat, girl, giraffe, gorilla, grapes
This will widen Vito’s vocabulary, be familiarised and get comfortable with the letter and their sounds, and eventually be able to sort objects or items based on the beginning letters. These are the basics of early reading. I was using these techniques with Mavi as well (aside from frequently reading books) and I never had problems with him getting comfortable with reading. We are working on this alongside with our Letter booklets in learning about letters and on how to read.
Anyway, we are working on letters BTG. I gathered objects from our Learning Resources counters, Safari Toob figures, Schleich and Playmobil playsets to assemble what we have now. I am using Melissa & Doug baskets from this playset. I took photos of the objects, printed and laminated them for this activity.
The process is pretty simple:
- Present the materials to the child. Tell your little ones that you have objects to name and match that begins with a certain letter.
- Try identifying the objects in the control sheet. If you have younger kids, you can skip this.
- Show the basket with objects to your child and say “let’s match these items to the sheet”
- Take one object at a time, ask the child to name it and you say the name of the object again and emphasize on the beginning letter sound.
- Give the object to the child and make him match it to the object in the sheet.
- Continue until you worked on all the objects in the basket.
I don’t have a schedule for this, but I am making sure we’re working on this everyday during the time that Vito is still alert and in the mood for “learning”.
Letter Tt: tiger, tree, tractor, teeth, turtle, triangle
Letter Bb: butterfly, banana, bee, bed, bird, bus, bike
This alphabet object sort was Mavi’s favourite activity to do when he was around 3 years old. He went into an obsession with letters and he can work on these all throughout the day. Check it out here.
I hope this will inspire you in your future early reading activities. Enjoy collecting objects as well!
