When I was planning for a Farm Unit, I wanted it to be simple because it’ll be the week of our arrival from our trip. This means, we are all tired (especially me!), and I need time to do all the unpacking. So my aim is still to provide activities to Vito with less preparation.
Now, I made these playdough last month and yes, they’re still good! The main objective of this play is to sort out the animal figures from Safari Toob and Shleich according to their “habitat”.
My habitat in the sorting tray is represented by the colours of the playdough. Green for grass, brown for mud, , yellow for hays and gray for land. Both of the boys enjoyed playing with this, especially with my playdough!
In case you wanted to try, here’s the famous playdough recipe that’s closest to the commercial playdough:
- food colouring
- 1/2 cup flour
- 1/2 cup water
- 8 tablespoon of salt
- 1 tsp of cream of tartar
- 1 and half tablespoon of vegetable oil
Combine all ingredients together, heat in a pan for about a few seconds (in medium heat) and then knead. And that’s it!!
This fun activity lets your child familiarize with the different farm animals and let them explore using the playdoughs and the animal figures which are exact replicas of the animals.
We also try to sing our favourite Old McDonald song as we play with these animals and had so much fun making animal sounds! Books we used to go along with our Farm Unit are: Old MacDonald Had a Farm and On the Farm, both from Usborne. They’re really good books, with simple texts and graphics, perfect for toddlers!
