One of the best tools for teaching spatial relationships are puzzles, of any form. So in our Farm Unit, I added some puzzle works for Vito. These materials were with us for a long time now and has been using them from time to time.
For puzzle work, you can use:
- Puzzles that have no more than four pieces and have simple designs of familiar objects: food, animals, cars or airplanes
- Montessori Zoology puzzles, we love these! We own most of the animals in their puzzle series. I added a figure of a horse (from Shleich) so he can have an idea of a 3D horse
- cutting activity: cutting farm animals into halves. I added a guide so he’ll know where to cut.
Important note when working with puzzles, don’t push your kids when they’re not yet ready or don’t make them work on a puzzle that they’re not interested to. Usually I remove the learning materials that Vito finds boring then re-introduce it again to him the next month. These things normally happen, it’s always a hit or miss.
