Mavi borrowed this book from the library so we can revisit the Animal Kingdom and he wanted to explore more of the other kingdoms of life. We’ve done a couple of times before (here and here) and he loves revisiting this over and over.
The Tree of Life book is simply beautiful and is laid out in a way that is engaging to the child. The graphics and illustrations are perfection! They captured not just Mavi’s interest on animals but Vito’s as well. There’s not much discussions, which is good for young gradeschoolers as they tend to get bored with books that have less illustrations.
We first explored and had small discussion of the 5 kingdoms. The book illustrated the kingdoms in a tree form, so beautiful! Then we focused on the Animal Kingdom. (See our Plant Kingdom activities here).
To go along with our book, we used our Animal Kingdom learning pack. It contains real images of the animals in the Animal Kingdom and we love to study each category. We further discuss other examples of animals that he thinks are strange like the echinoderms, porifera and cnidaria.
After reading the book, we played a game. I read out the description (still from the pack) and he has to tell me what the animal is. I also asked him to give me more samples of animals in each category.
We love exploring our world and all the organisms that surrounds it. Mavi would like to explore the fungi world and bacteria. Hope I can come up with means on how to work on this with him.
