Vito is 32 months old.
The appearance of the honey bees in our front and backyard has led us to look into the lives of these beautiful creatures who are the main source of honey. Vito is terrified of them but not Mavi. We were out the other day catching a few of them, observing how they produce the buzzing sound and freed them up again.
To fully understand this yellow-black insect, I prepared these materials. The printed ones are from The Wise Owl (who’s happy to give me copies for free!), the book that we so love was purchased from Book Depository (FREE Worldwide delivery!) and the bee figures are from Safari Toob Safariology which I purchased from Amazon.
After observing the bees for days outdoors, we read the book Honey in a Hive, a very informative book about the lives of bees: queen, workers and drones. I can’t recommend this enough! The book was well written and comes with beautiful illustrations. After reading the book, Mavi felt sorry for the bees! They die right after they have served their purpose LOL.
The cards were beautifully made. I loved the simple text they used, Vito can easily identify the letters (though he’s not reading yet). The images are clear and can be easily matched with the Safari figures. Here Vito is working on the control sheets of the 3 part cards.
To those who are interested, these cards are made to order. The Wise Owl is a Philippine based shop that sells Montessori-inspired learning kits and materials for kids. They reached out to me for consultation which I’m happy to do. For more details here are their social media sites:

The Wise Owl also provided a life cycle wheel to demonstrate the “cycle” of life. Vito loved this!
As for Mavi, I made him use the definition cards. I didn’t direct him on what to do here, he’s making his own activity with the cards.
The Wise Owl provided us with activity sheets that comes with the pack but Mavi wasn’t able to work on it due to football training.
I love that both of my kids benefited in this activity. For Vito, he’s able to identify the “egg” and “bee”, and match the cards to its corresponding figure while Mavi was able to understand the life cycle of the bees and how much work it takes to make a yummy jar of pure honey!
For extensions, we’re using our Zoology Insect Puzzles (butterfly and wasp).
Looking forward to our next life cycle lesson, we might do frog or green bean plant so stay tuned!
