I think is one of the best example of explaining to a 7 year old that sound travels. I enjoyed playing with this as a young child. But instead of using styro cups, we were used tin cans which I think is more effective.
This is so easy to prepare. We have plenty of styro cups and we made use of it for a little fun and experiment. As you all know, we had Sound and Music last week and I try to make activities that both of the boys can learn and enjoy. Vito had his musical bells and musical instruments, while Mavi had this for a lesson.
So why can he hear Vito’s voice on the other end of the cup? So simple! Because sound waves travel and that it’s even more better when it travels through solids like this string than in air. When you speak in the cup, the sound waves are converted into vibrations. The vibrations travel along the string and are converted back to sound waves at the other end of the line.
Amazing isn’t it? Why don’t you try it?
