The first activity was the tray. I prepared these plastic trays and placed brown playdoh for land (this playdoh is homemade and you can get the recipe here), blue coloured water (I used food coloring for the blue water) for our ocean and an empty tray for air. He named the animals as he sorted them. Some animal figures were a bit of a challenge like the turtle and octopus. Here we are using Safari Exotic Birds TOOB, Safari Coral Reef TOOB, and Safari Wild TOOB.
Once he was done we talked about the animals once more and had a brief play pretend.
The other day I presented an abstract version of the activity wherein I used pictures (the sorting mats below are FREE for download from here). We played with these after reading a few books of animals living on land, in the water and those flying in the air.
This is a simple activity with lots of things to learn for the child. This is also a good introduction to animal habitats which we will work on once he turns 3 years old.
