Vito is currently working hard learning his letters, sounds, and expanding his vocabulary. Due to weather constraint we are mostly stuck at home, therefore the lack of outdoor nature studies. So our mornings are mostly spent for his “homeschool”. We are busy reading books, learning letters, doing writing, and practical life activities.
In this post, I would like to share Vito’s language lessons which you can try in your homes as well. Remember my post on booklets? I mentioned in the post that at home we’re learning letters and their sounds in groups (color coded). First group is RAMF-BITG, second is CUSN-POLH and lastly DEXQY-WXZKVJ. This idea came from My Montessori Journey, one of my favourite blogs dated back in 2010. Read more about this grouping here.
Each course (group) will run from 2 to 3 weeks. We are working on these one step at a time. We worked on the RAMF last week, and BITG this week. Depending on his progress, we might start a new group after this or still continue on the 3rd week, but mostly revisiting favourite activities just for review.
How do we use these letters?
Matching objects to beginning letters. My ultimate goal here is for Vito to learn new words, be able to identify what the beginning letters are, discover new objects or items and learn what the objects are all about. So aside from matching or sorting objects according to their beginning sounds, we will have more discussions about the objects and even make stories out of them. Our objects for RAMF-BITG
I prepared 2 objects for each letter to start with. If your kid is like mine who has no patience in sitting down and doing work like this, then I suggest that you start with one or two objects first just to test the water. I’m saying this because with Mavi, he can sort out 5-10 objects for each letter when he was on Vito’s age. Mavi will work on 4 first and keeps on asking for more. Even when he doesn’t know what the object is, I will just tell him what it is and he will know exactly what the beginning letter is. With Vito, it is a whole lot different! I’m not saying he is slow compared to Mavi, he knows but he just doesn’t want to do it or just wants to annoy me. I can see it in his face because he would smile wickedly and place the object in a different letter LOL. Now if this happens to you, that’s pretty normal!
Now with our objects ready, I started placing the letter cards on the mat. Vito saw me prepare the magnetic letters and volunteered to match the letters to the cards. He is obsessed with matching, thus he enjoyed doing this! Vito placed the magnetic letters in the exact way they are arranged in the letter cards. He would say “big F, small f” as he placed the letters.
Then we started placing the objects according to their beginning letters. Our conversation would go like this:
Me: This is a …? (He usually gets the item from me as I ask him LOL)
Vito: rainbow
Me: Rrr-rrrr rainbow. Does rainbow start with fff? Mmmm? Aaaah? Rrrr? (do this as you point to each letter)
Here’s a complete set of our RAMF. Expect that there will be pauses along the way because some kids are more interested playing the objects than matching them to the letters. It happens to us, and Vito is sometimes doing it as well. There are days wherein he participates really well but there are also times that he’s more of a mischief.
We tried letter B. He was more into this group of letters than the RAMF. I guess it was because he was distracted with the feather. He just wanted to play with it and get tickled.
Alphabet Books
Similar concept to the ones here but I just put all images in one photo with no text. He loves identifying objects (in image form) when we started playing our BINGO game. This inspired me to create sheet type of alphabet books. Sorry, but this is for personal use only. The TOU of the images doesn’t allow me to distribute them in all image form. I will create something similar but with text and other forms so I can distribute it through my shop. And my booklet is not yet complete, I’m still saving for other images.
Just to show you how each sheet looks like. Both of the boys love this! Mavi is requesting for a coloring activity!
We used the book for identifying objects, and if some of these objects are available around the house, I would point it to Vito so he’ll see a real version. Like for example, a ruler, a magnet, bone, box, ink and globe.
Sound Book
This is for Vito to paste the letter that we have learned for the day. After reading the Alphabet Book and reviewing a letter sound, we’ll take a cut-off letter and glue it on his Sound Book. Again, this idea is from My Montessori Journey. Inside the book are just empty pages of ordinary paper and I cut out the letters from a black cardstock. We are using lowercase here. You can glue as many letters as you can in here, in case you revisit a letter.BINGO Game
This started his fascination with letters!Read about it here (Early Literacy with Beginning Letter Sound BINGO Game)!
And in case you are looking for real images, we also have this Beginning Letter Sound Phonics Alphabet Card Strips. We used this in the same manner as our Alphabet Book except that these are more portable, kept Vito busy when we are in the cafe or travelling. You can buy this learning material in my shop, Beginning Letter Sound Phonics Cards. We also used some magnetic letters in playing this game.
And finally , we worked on identifying big and small letters as well. For the cards, we either use pegs or glass gems… just to avoid monotony.
And that’s about it! What do you think of our activities? If you have suggestions, we would love to hear your thoughts!

ReplyDeleteHi! So sorry, but currently, this is not available in the shop. I will surely add this in my to do list if you are interested though. Thanks!
DeleteAnd by the way, thank you for taking time reading the blog. I love it when readers are inspired through our activities. Thank you so much!
DeleteHi! Great blogs by the way very informative. I got so inspired by your ideas that I started buying homeschooling stuffs from Divisoria. I do have a question. Is it possible to use RAMF-BITG to my 37 months old even if he is not yet familiar with both the letter names and sounds? I was thinking of teaching him the letter names and sounds in that order. Thank you.
ReplyDeleteI love your ideas. Thank you so much. When will you have the alphabet book available in your shop?
