With all these Halloween decorations, Vito became fascinated with owls. We’ve been reading The Owl and Owl Babies for days now, and he loves looking at the pictures matching his animal figure. He would also pretend to to have big eyes and pretend flying around the house and say “Im owl Mommy”. So I whipped a few activities to help him explore this beautiful creature together with some night-time animals.
As I mentioned, the books we are reading are Owl Babies (fiction) and The Owl (non-fiction). We also have a few more books about nocturnal animals but they were not his favourite. The images you see are from the book The Owl. We love this book, like any of the books we own from this series. Informative, and lots of beautiful pictures and illustrations. (You will find our Owl Babies craft here)
The book also features bats, which Mavi would describe as “scary”. We are using animal figures from Schleich, for matching animals in the book.
The idea of poem and body puzzle came from Just Montessori. I made this simple puzzle of owl parts to be assembled as I read the poem (copied from Just Montessori). Vito loved this activity! He had fun assembling the owl! They are just made of cardstock becauses as I said, this is an instant activity. It would be nice if they were made out of felt sheet.
And just recently, Vito loves to read! Yes, pretending to read anything that he encouters with text. Do you think that this is a sign he’s ready to learn how to read? Hmm… we’ll see. I might give him some ready activities in the coming days.
Then I mentioned that owls are birds. They have big eyes, wings to fly, feet and big claws to hold on to tree branches and beaks which they use to catch their food. To go along with this, Vito worked on the body parts of a bird using our Montessori 3 part cards. He loved using 3 part cards! He loves identifying the parts that are highlighted and compare it to his own.
This is my updated Parts of a Bird Nomenclature Cards. I will update the one in my shop with this once I finish fixing the file. I’m happy that I used a real picture. It’s way better than my old one and Vito can easily identify the parts using this image and the red highlights!
And last but not the least, I gave Vito some owl coloring activity. He loves to colour, so enjoyed doing this using his Pip Squeak Markers.
And that’s all for now! We don’t have a curriculum as of the moment, we’re just taking things slowly and based our learning activities on the flow of the season, books and current interest.
