Valentine's Day season is always the time wherein the boys and I would talk about flowers. Not just because it is Valentine's Day, but because this is basically the time wherein we get to see spring flowers starting to bloom out from their buds. We see them everywhere, in the backyard and front lawn, parks and of course in our neighbours’ houses. My knowledge of flowers is very limited; I only knew of some tropical flowers from my country and Asian countries. Of course, there’s always the rose, tulip and orchids… but no, I haven’t heard of daffodils, crocus and poppies not until I stepped foot in Europe.
I bought the boys this fact cards to help us explore these common flowers together. Of course, we see them around, but we have difficulties identifying their names. After some online research, I got us this Usborne Flowers (Spotter's Cards). It is composed of 30 common flowers with beautiful (and big) illustrations of flowers at the front and interesting facts at the back of the cards. These are really, really beautiful cards and have helped us a lot in identifying some of the flowers we’ve seen so far.
Mavi and Vito can easily match the cards to the flowers we have at home. Can you see some helpful information on how to identify the tulip? The illustration is so beautiful!
Now, so far, we’ve seen daffodils, crocus and snowdrops. We hope for some sun and dry weather in the next few days so the boys and I can continue identifying flowers. We hope to visit the park, but our neighbourhood’s flowers are more than enough for this activity.
On some days when we can’t go out, we use this Flower 3 Part Cards and Safari Ltd Flowers TOOB figures for indoor activities. This is a perfect alternative for learning about flowers without real flowers (especially if they are unavailable in your area). Toddlers as young as two years old can do this matching activity (image to object and control card – picture card), and for my three years old, he’s starting to match the label cards too.
You can get the cards from my shop. The file has over 20 kinds of flowers with real high-quality beautiful flowers isolated on white background.
