With Vito’s current obsession with letters, I’m focusing on letter recognition, phonics and writing from hereon. Our homeschool activities in March are mostly revisiting past activities and doing a lot of extensions. Check the details below to know more about it:
LANGUAGE
This month, we will work on objects with letters dexqk-jvwyz. Activities for this one includes sorting pictures according to their beginning letter sound, writing using our alphabet mats and sandpaper letters, Bingo game and I’ll insert CVC using the vowel ‘e’.
Phonics and Movable Alphabet. I will attempt to start building cvc words with Vito so to move forward with our phonics activities. He knows all the letters and their sounds and for a time we’re stuck there. So for this month, all his knowledge of letters will be put into use because of the cvc activities that we’re going to have. (Movable alphabet can be purchased here).
Speaking of CVC, we’ll be working with the vowel ‘e’ sound for the next two weeks, and move on to the letter ‘i’ once he progresses. The best thing about kids is that once that “sensitive period” arrives, they absorb just about anything and learn so quickly. I am using the 3 lesson period whenever we work on our CVC words.
Montessori Plastic Insets. This arrived early this month and Vito has been using it to practise writing (pencil grip). I will keep this in the shelf since he loves it and keeps on using it during quiet time. We are using the plastic insets instead of the metal insets because we don’t have space. The tray is also very useful, so I highly suggest that you get one of this too!
SENSORIAL
PINK TOWER AND BROWN STAIRS. We will revisit our Pink Tower activities and this time, add the brown stairs to explore more patterns and structures. I talked about how much Vito loves the pink tower and enjoys creating structures. With the brown stairs I’m sure we’ll be making more interesting patterns!
THERMIC TABLETS. I am so excited to introduce this!! This Montessori sensorial material helps the child refine his thermal sense, meaning being able to identify the differences in temperature. Will talk more about thermic tablets soon once we start using it!
MATH
We’ll slow down on math this month because we basically count all the time. Since counting, shapes and number recognition is integrated in our daily life, I will stick to one math material for this month and that’s the Montessori beads. For now, we’ll work on short beads, doing a lot of extensions if needed. We’ll be using our printable material for this one. The Montessori Color Beads and Golden Beads Learning Pack printable is available for sale in my shop. Buy it from here.
CULTURE AND SCIENCE
St. Patrick’s Day. Ireland’s national holiday is just around the corner so I prepared these themed trays for St. Patrick’s. To know more about it click here.
Landforms. I’m currently assembling activities for Earth Day this coming April. The only thing I have in mind for now are the landforms. I’ll introduce this on the last week of March to jump start our Earth study. Mavi and I worked on this before, so I am so excited to introduce this to Vito. A learning printable about land and water formation is also available in my shop if you need a concise guide on this topic. You can buy the printable from here. If you also want to show examples of real world land and water formations to your students then you can get this printable from here.
PRACTICAL LIFE SKILLS
Buttoning. Vito is so eager to learn how to button so I’m giving him this button frame to work on. Alternately, you can also purchase these amazing dressing frames!
BOOKS
These are the fiction books in Vito’s reading basket. We read a lot of books everyday and I find it helpful to dedicate some fiction books for a month long reading so I can expose him to different stories, imagination, vocabulary and a little bit of comprehension.
Again, note that the activities above are just guides. There are times that we’re not able to do the activities in our list due to Vito’s interest. If he’s not showing interest in the activity, I just put it back in the shelf and do a separate one. Usually, Vito’s mood changes week by week. There are times he just wanted to do pink tower every day but the next week, all he ever wanted to do is play.
