I finally introduced the Montessori Stereognostic Bag to Vito. The Montessori Stereognostic Bag is often composed of 10 matching pairs of wooden shapes that is drawn in a bag to feel and match. This activity develops the stereognostic sense of the child, using touch to create a mental image of the object. Stereognostic sense is defined as the ability to perceive and recognize the form of objects in the absence of visual and auditory information. Other version of this is called “the mystery bag”, wherein most homeschool moms customized the content of their bags by putting nature objects or just about anything from around the house.
We started off by placing 5 objects inside the bag, and the other pairs in the basket. I asked Vito to feel and observe the shapes in the basket. Afterwhich, I told him that he’s going to look for the pair of each of the shapes in the bag without looking.
And so he did. He picked one shape at a time from the basket and after feeling it, he would proceed in looking for the other pair in the bag. Now, I highly recommend to prepare your camera because the kids look absolutely cute whenever they do this!
I love his reaction whenever he picked the correct pair!
Though this activity is a preparation work for geometry (3 dimensional solids), I have to say that the activity itself is enjoyable in its own! Even my 8 years old enjoyed this game too! Here’s a short video of Vito doing the actual activity. Hope you like it, enjoy!
Thank you! Simple instructions make me think that maybe I could have success introducing this to my 3.5 year old.
