DIFFERENT KINDS OF BIRDS
These are 3 part cards of Safari Toob Exotic Birds but we’re only using the control cards as of the moment. This activity is to help Vito identify some of the most beautiful and well loved birds in the world. We’re also using the Animalium Book (beautiful book!) in checking the different kinds of birds in a much bigger picture! These matching cards are included in the 200+ TOOBs Matching Cards which you can buy from my shop.
BIRDS HAVE FEATHERS
What are feathers for? Vito and I will explore feathers. I’ve been looking around for real ones in the craft store but couldn’t find any, except for those colorful feathers I bought years ago. I’m still waiting for my orders from Feather Shop in the UK to arrive so we can explore real feathers. The feathers you see here in the tray are the printable version. These are only for presentation to show that the feathers come in different forms, colors and sizes. The Feathers (Not Just for Flying) book is a good companion in learning about feathers too! If in case my feathers from UK will arrive later than expected, the boys and I will try to explore feathers in summer (and look around for real ones too!).
WHAT IS A BIRD
We’ll be using a Montessori Bird puzzle to differentiate a bird from other animals. We’ll be using a 3 part cards parts of a bird as well to go along with the puzzle. I included a Schleich eagle in the tray so we can identify the parts in the figure versus the one in the puzzle and cards.
BIRD ADAPTATIONS
This study is to expose the child on the birds’ different beak and feet formation which are essential for their survival. For example, birds feeding on fish has a different beak formation compared to those who are feeding on worms, seeds and small insects. Similarly, birds with webbed feet can swim compared to those birds who can grip well on trees.
The bird figures were are using: peacock, owl, falcon, macaw bird, duck, swan, pelican, puffin, hen, eagle, ostrich, toucan and penguin.
THE LIFECYCLE OF A BIRD
We are using our Safari Toob Life Cycle of a Chicken to learn about the life cycle of a bird. You can read about the post, Introducing the Life Cycle of a Chicken to Preschoolers, here. In addition to the book I mentioned in the Life Cycle of a Chicken post, we are also using Egg My First Discovery Book on learning about the stages of egg development of the chicken. This is a really good book for kids, has beautiful illustrations and visuals plus the transparent pages that Vito truly loves!
COUNTING EGGS IN THE NEST
This is an egg counting activity which I prepared for Vito. Using the Montessori sandpaper numbers, he’s going to match the number of eggs in the nest using the squeezy tweezers.
BIRDS AND PATTERN BLOCKS
The boys are rediscovering their interest in pattern blocks so I prepared a few bird template for Vito, something he can work on independently while I do some chores. (Forgot where I downloaded this bird template from, but you can check my Pinterest Board for the source)
BIRD MATCHING ACTIVITY
This is a fun game of matching male and female birds. Though the cards are really intended for Mavi, the illustrations in the cards are just too beautiful not to introduce to Vito. Besides, these are not that hard to match. I will give 5 or 6 pairs to Vito and let’s see if he can work it out (for sure he can!)
BIRD’S BEAK
This is just one of the activities we’ll be doing in exploring the bird’s beak. We’ll be using different tongs, tweezers, chopstick trainer or maybe a straw in picking up objects to see and experiment on how birds pick or get their food. More on this soon!
