I needed to discard some herbs, but before doing so I decided to whip a sensorial activity with the boys to make use of these scented plants. I already have Herbs and Spices learning materials from years ago, so the preparation was quite easy. I also added more spices like turmeric, cumin, black peppercorn, garlic, ginger, and cloves.
The cards are from my shop Herbs and Spices, and this is the ONLY 3 part cards that we have that’s placed in the kitchen. It helps whenever Mavi would ask me about a certain smell when I’m cooking and I would show him the herbs or spices that I’m using in my ingredients.
And after preparing the exploration tray, I let the boys match and smell the herbs first. See Vito’s reaction? I also discussed that most of these herbs/spices are also the main ingredients in making essential oils, which we are also using at home.
Now, this is the part where I let the kids taste the garlic, turmeric, and cumin LOL.
I used the cumin on kebabs and curry so Mavi really knows about this kind of spice. After he smelled it, he immediately recognized the “curry”!.
Once we’re done with the presentation, I left the tray on the table and allowed the boys to explore more. It’s fun to see them experimenting, mixing, and tasting the spices. I should have taken photos of those facial reactions! I love this spontaneous activity. It helped them explore their sense of taste and smell, and be more familiar of all the spice and herbs Mommy is using in her cooking.
These cards are all available in one learning pack, Herbs and Spices 3 Part Cards. For more details on this, click here or the image below.
