Hands-on Learning on the Human Body for Preschoolers

Vito is getting more interested in how his body works, especially that a few months ago, he got sick and I have to discuss some important things to him about his health and body.  With this, I started reading to him some of our body books, explaining what happens to the food that he eats, to the water that he drinks, and why he has blood when he has a cut.

This led to introducing the “inside of his body”, and the organs of the body.  Here I used a human torso model (Human Torso Model Set) to show the realistic structure of the organs, and how they all fit in the body.  He played around with the torso first and then came along the “what’s this?” and the “what does it do?” of the organ pieces.

From here, I took our Safari Toob Human Organs figures and started identifying the internal organs with the help of our Internal Organs of the Human Body 3 Part Cards (we also used the ones in the Human Torso Model set).  He kept picking one organ at a time, asked me what it is and its function.  Informally I told him that the brain is in his head and helps him think, the heart pumps his blood so he can live, his lungs for breathing, stomach takes care of the food that he eats, kidney for his wee. I tried to use simple and relatable words so he can easily grasp the concepts and retain the ideas.

To learn about the human body internal organs, we used our Internal Organs of the Human Body 3 Part Cards.  This is a bundle pack that includes 3 part cards and definition cards for descriptions.  Vito can name all the organs here except for the liver and kidneys.  The use of 3 part cards and the 3 lesson period was very helpful.  You can get the cards from our shop.

Once we were done, he started to ask about how the body wastes are produced.  So we did a few activities on the human body systems, which I will share in my next post.
