Identifying Common Flowers for Preschoolers

Tuesday, February 27, 2018

Is it spring in your part of the world?  Well, it’s far from spring here but we are already starting to see spring flowers sprouting and blooming everywhere.  During our daily walks, Vito loves spotting these flowers and is identifying them.  It comes in handy that I have already prepared some learning materials to go along with this new discoveries.  Just like last year, we used these flower cards to name the spring flowers that we see in the park and in our estate.

It also gives us the opportunity to discuss why some flowers are still in the “bud” stage while some are already blooming.  To extend this knowledge, we worked on the life cycle of a flower plant at home, using our sequencing cards set which is available here.

I told him that the cards tell the story of how flower plants grow. He didn’t give me a chance to present, he told me right away that he knows how they grow, so he immediately placed the cards in sequence.  It took him awhile to figure out the first card in the sequence as he usually doesn’t see someone planting seeds.  But I explained that plants come from seeds.  From here he immediately figured out the sequence, observing each card carefully.  I like this activity, aside from puzzles, sequencing events is kind of challenging to him (using pictures only).

After sequencing the cards, he would tell a story about the flowering plant, from the first to the last sequence.  I love that it gave him the opportunity to use his own words and imagination in coming up of these stories.  It also helped that our images in the sequencing cards are simple and child friendly, so it is easy for him to describe each event!

Once familiarized with spring flowers, I introduced Vito to other flowers that only grows in tropical countries.  We made use of our flowers 3 part cards to learn about these flowers.  As we worked on them, he was fascinated to learn about the hibiscus, that my friends and I used to play with to make bubbles.

You can get these beautiful 3 part cards here.

We also used the cards with Safari Toob’s Flowers!  These are beautiful!  The figures allowed Vito to be familiarized with some of the flowers that aren’t available here in Europe.

And that’s about it! It was a lovely learning experience!  We’ll continue to explore flowers and plants as spring arrives.
