We had a fabulous time last weekend examining the insides of fruits. We did a similar activity years ago, but I didn’t want to put paints on fruits this time so I made this gorgeous matching learning material for Vito to work around with instead of recreating the insides using paints. More details on this fruit learning material here. This is easy to prepare and fun to work with kids!
First, pick up some varieties of fruits from your local grocery or shop and slice them into halves. Then start introducing each fruit to your child, especially those that aren’t familiar to him. As you can see, Vito is exploring kiwi. Talk about the texture and the color.
Then present the printed material and show the column of the outside of fruits and the images of what it looks like in the inside. Then have the child match the real fruits (halves) to the printed material.
And here comes the fun part! We’ve already used our sense of sight to match the inside to the outside of the fruits, now it’s time to do some taste tests to explore our sense of taste. Vito enjoyed this part the most!
Once we have tasted all our fruit samples, we worked on our printables again and this time, we matched the inside of fruit cards to our outside of fruit mats. I laminated the sheets and added velcro tape so we can snap the inside cards in our mats for easier storage. This is one extension activity that Vito loves doing over and over again as he keeps on matching real fruits to images, then matching the cards to the mats without the fruits.
Now this is one activity we would like to try over and over again as we eat and explore fruits all throughout the year.
Pin this for later!
