He was glued to the map and landmark figures. I only identified some landmarks as I didn’t want to crowd the entire map with figures. I highly recommend that you prepare two or three figures for each continent to discuss with your kids the first time you try this activity. You should know these landmarks, their location, and their features/history because kids ask many questions. Our learning material (bundle) has information cards about these landmarks if needed. Check the details here if you want the printable learning material (Landmarks Around the World Bundle Pack). The miniature figures are from Safari Toobs.
It is best to use an actual globe, as this shows the child that the world is round, not flat, as depicted by the map. Ours is an affordable globe, but you can purchase a similar one on Amazon. I bought a small one to fit on our shelf, and it is just the right size for the boys to use. You can see Vito plotting the landmarks of North America.
Then for extension work, I used our landmarks printables to show Vito what these figures look like in real life. Our learning material in the shop comes with 3 part cards, but I only used the picture cards because Vito can’t read yet.
I love that he examines the figures before matching them to the pictures. So much for visual discrimination, concentration, and attention to detail!
To some, this may be a simple matching activity, but in our case, it opened a lot of discussions and storytelling with Vito. It’s a great way to connect with your little ones, especially if you have real-life experience with these places. Kids love to listen to stories, especially if Mom and Dad are involved. Again, this activity focuses more on familiarization than memorizing the names and locations. It is more about exposing your kids to other places and telling beautiful stories about these famous landmarks which they will or have encountered in books.
Note: I have used these cards for years already. They are made from high-quality images, so I printed them on photo/premium paper and laminated them for longevity. It was worth it because we have used these a lot of times already for both boys.
