Rainy season can be a good time to introduce the water cycle to your child. Here are a few tips, resources, and activities on how to start.
Start by observing your surroundings. You can find photos of our observations in our Instagram account. First thing is to check the clouds with your kids because rain comes from the clouds. Explain that dark sky means it’s going or about to rain.
When it finally pours, observe what happens when it’s raining. Do things get wet? Does it get cold or hot? Do things get warm? And when the rain finally stops and the sun comes out, what happens to the water? If it dries, where do you think it goes?
From here, you can start some formal activities with your kids. In our case, we read related books about the weather and water cycle. Here are some of my recommended books about the weather system and the water cycle:
- Clouds (Let's-Read-and-Find-Out Science 1)
- Water (My First Discoveries)
- Down Comes the Rain (Let's-Read-and-Find-Out Science 2)
- The Weather (My First Discoveries)
Because of the books that we read, Vito got interested with the water cycle. I gave him extension activities afterwards for a more hands-on approach on learning about it. We used our Preschool Water Cycle Activity Pack here. To know about this material, click here.
Here Vito is making a water cycle poster using our printed materials. He is using our poster as a guide. We used an A3 cardstock for this poster so it is bigger and visible when placed on the wall.
He enjoyed sticking the cut-outs on the paper and most especially in drawing the arrows.
The next day, I worked on the water cycle activity with my eldest, but Vito insisted on working with us too. The second set of activity included in the file is also suitable for his age as it includes coloring activities which most kids love. Here he is coloring his clouds, mountains, and rain using our Lyra pencils.
And he also enjoyed cutting the cut-outs.
Now we need to place the cut-outs in the water cycle mats as presented by our poster 2 (seen in the picture). Again because Vito can’t read yet, he assembled his work using the poster as a guide.
Here’s the work of my eldest. He used a different mat, the one with definitions.
Look at these water cycle mats! I Love that both boys are learning together on this one! For more information and preview of the materials, visit our shop or click here.
And for some more interesting activity, we did the rain cloud experiment again! This has been a favorite of the boys and we love to do it over again!
And that's about it! For science related activities, try any of these:
