Four Seasons Sorting Activity

The days are getting longer, and we are having more sun than rain, so we are spending most of our time outdoors these days and observing the changes in our environment. I posted our nature finds and observations on my Instagram account, and Vito loves so many things in our surroundings (like insects and flowers!). With all these changes, we started rereading our tree book, defining each season and the changes we see around us.

We recalled the snow earlier this year and then moved to the part wherein we saw birds nesting and plants sprouting.

For an exercise, we used our Four Seasons Sorting Activity Pack (Real Images) to learn about objects and symbols that represent each season. I started by introducing two seasons to Vito. Vito picked Autumn and Winter, and we focused on these first. Autumn is his favourite season because he remembers the conkers, Halloween, and all his experiences with the “orange leaves”.

And because of the snow, he can’t forget about winter. We discussed the images in the cards and linked them to his experiences.

Sorting the entire four seasons is a lot of work for a 4-year-old, so it is okay to work with two seasons at a time or maybe just one if you don’t want to do the sorting activity and just stick to discussing the symbols and objects.

I loved that he could recall so many objects that represented each season. This is the reason why experience is the best teacher. Let your kids experience what each season brings by observing the weather (you can also discuss the clothing used during a season), the fruits that are available for each season, the animals that you see, the colours of the plants (bare? orange? or green?) and more.
