Spin and Trace: Alphabet Writing Game for Preschoolers

Last month, I made these tracing and writing sheets for Vito to add some spice in his writing activities.  He loves the salt tray and Montessori sandpaper, but these sheets are so helpful as they require less preparation and no mess.  The activity sheet requires you to create a spinner using a paper clip and a pencil (or a pushpin if you have one).  Colored pencils or markers are also needed.

Spin and Trace Writing Game: What you need

• Spin and Trace Alphabet Writing Sheets
• Colored Markers or Colored Pencils
• Jumbo Pushpin (optional) or Pencil for the spinner
• Paperclip for the spinner

Here’s a closer look at our spinner.  I couldn’t find our paperclips, so I used a jumbo plastic needle.  There are two types of sheets included in our pack: colored and make your own.  Here we are using the colored sheets.  The child will spin the spinner and trace the letter based on the color pointed to by the spinner.


We got yellow on our first spin, so Vito traced the first letter ‘s’ with a yellow colored marker.


The child will continue to spin until all the letters in the sheet are traced.



The last row is blank, and I only added a dot to guide the child to where to start.  After tracing the first two rows of letters, the blank row will allow the child to write the letter on his/her own.  Try to observe if the child is confident enough to write the letters.

Spin and Trace Writing Game: Tips On How to Use This Material

• Be sure to guide the child with the proper stroke.  I highly recommend that you demonstrate the stroke first if the child is not yet familiar with it.  For beginning writing, you can check the following posts: How to Use Montessori Sandpaper Letters and Writing Practice for Preschoolers.
• Allow the child to pick the letter of his choice.  It will give him more enthusiasm to work on a letter of his/her choice.
• This learning material includes a “make your own code” set where you or your child can choose the colors he/she wants to work on in the spinner.
• This is an independent work but always supervise your child with any activity.
• Corkboard is needed if you are using a push pin.
