Note that this is a growing collection of books. We may be reading some of these books a couple of times and some books just once. I would take note of Vito’s favorites and purge those less popular to his current interest.
A First Book of Nature. Full of beautiful illustrations! It gives us a poetic description of all the icons and objects we see and experience every season.
Angus Lost. This is a lovely story about a dog experiencing cabin fever in winter. He goes on an adventure to see “what’s out there,” to experience change, and eventually miss what he has taken for granted at home.
A New Coat for Anna. Based on a true story, this book is about the hard work, patience, and sacrifice of a mother to be able to provide a new coat to her daughter during the aftermath of World War II.
Very Last First Time. A story of an Inuit family in northern Canada on how they search for food in the harsh snow. A good cultural book about introducing the way of life of the Inuit.
The Mitten. A funny story about animals in the snow trying to fit inside a mitten.
The Snowy Day. The story of a boy enjoying the snow during the winter season. It is a first-person narrative, so we get to glimpse what’s in the boy’s mind as he explores the snow outdoors.
The Reasons for Seasons. A non-fiction book that explains the seasons.
Polar Regions. Book of animals and their habitat in the polar regions. An easy to read text and has beautiful illustrations.
Sleep Tight Farm. We get to glimpse how a family living on the farm prepares for winter.
Winter (The Nursery Collection). A book by Shirley Hughes that contains beautiful poems about a family during winter.
Owl Moon. A charming story about a girl and her father taking on a walking adventure in the frozen forest.
Animals in Winter. A non-fiction book about animals during the winter seasons. The book introduces animals that hibernate in the winter and what other animals do to survive during the cold season.
The Shortest Day. Fantastic book about the Winter Solstice. It talks about what causes the shortest day of the year and the celebrations that were rooted in ancient times and carried into modern culture.
The Story of Snow. All about snow! The kids love learning about snow, and it fascinates them! Thus this is a perfect companion for understanding where the snow came from, how it was formed, what it looks like, etc.
Goodbye Autumn, Hello Winter. Beautiful book about the changes of the season from Autumn to Winter.
Sunshine Makes the Seasons. I added this book because it answered Mavi’s questions on what causes the seasons. Yes, we know there are seasons, and we are familiar with the order of seasons… but somehow, he wanted to know what causes these seasons.
The Reader. A classic picture book about a boy and his dog exploring the winter snow.
Here Is the Arctic Winter. Beautiful illustrations of the web of life during the winter season in the Arctic region.
I have a few more books on the way for winter reading; these are:
- Winter is Coming
- White Snow Bright Snow
- Amazing Animal Journeys (for migration)
And that’s about it! These are great books, but nothing beats real-life experiences like walking in the forest during winter, observing the weather (snowing, raining, getting dark), keeping the behavior of animals (birds, etc.), and making your own winter stories!
Pin this for later!
