Vito loves the book, What's for Lunch?! He loves learning all about the food groups, on what food will help him have stronger bones and teeth, food that will give him energy, and food that will keep him healthy. I love that he developed this interest early on. I think that it's important to educate little ones about healthy food because right now, he's super conscious on what he eats, and he's more eager to eat fruits, drink lots of milk and water!
Come take a look at some of the learning activities that we worked on to support his interest on food.
Books and resources:
All praises to the series Let's Read and Find Out Science Level 1. The books in this series are perfect for kids ages 4 years and older. Currently, Vito is obsessed with the What's For Lunch. We read it EVERY NIGHT. So to go along with the book, we used our Nutrition Mini Learning Pack. It contains tons of beautiful learning materials on food groups suited for young kids. You will find more details about this learning material by clicking here or the image below.
I started off presenting the different food groups to Vito using the food groups posters included in the pack. After we discussed each group, he worked on sorting the printable food learning materials. In a home setting, it is still best if you can use real food from your kitchen for a real life experience. Or alternatively, if you have a budget, there are tons of food group toys available in Amazon and in some educational shops as well. We didn't use the food in the kitchen for sorting but after this activity, we examined each of the food that we have in the fridge and kitchen and identified the group to which they belong.
Then we talked about the food pyramid. I introduced the food pyramid to Vito and discussed the relevance of the pyramid representation. Note that I have a pyramid included in the learning pack and it is based on the American version of the food pyramid. The one I showed here with Vito is printed from the HSE (Ireland's Health Services). Make sure you present the food pyramid recommended by your country's health agency if there is one.
And that's about it! Pretty simple, engaging, and easy to prepare thanks to our learning pack. We will be doing a couple more food learning activities before we move on to learning about the weather (Vito heard some thunder and this time he is so curious about it) so stay tuned!
