My 6-year-old child is enthusiastic about learning more about their teeth and dental health after we went for a routine checkup with our dentist yesterday. As a result, I prepared some fun and educational activities for them at home, and we had a wonderful time discussing dental health together.
Here are some activities and ideas you can try with your children or students to create a dental-themed unit. If you have any questions, please feel free to leave a comment or send me an email.
Dental Unit: Primary and Permanent Teeth Development
Children are interested in learning about their teeth, such as how many they have, when they lose their baby teeth, and more. You can introduce them to the concept of primary or baby teeth and permanent teeth using charts or diagrams that can be easily found online. This will help them develop an understanding of the two sets of teeth. At home, we use our Science Time Dentistry Deluxe Kit, which contains the two models in 3D, so it was easier to introduce it to Vito.
Dental Unit: Types of Teeth
Here, I introduced the different teeth types, shapes, and functions.I made these cards, and you can download them from here.
Dental Unit: What's Inside Your Tooth?
After Vito's recent filling, I showed him the anatomy of a tooth. This way, we can discuss which part of the tooth may be broken and the reason behind swollen or painful gums.Dental Unit: What is a Cavity?
Here's an illustration of how cavities develop and why we must show this to the kids!Dental Unit: Taking Good Care of Your Teeth
Kids now know that brushing their teeth keeps them healthy and clean and prevents the development of plaque and cavities. So we also discussed certain foods that will strengthen our teeth, and surprisingly, Vito recognized that some of these are proteins!
