Autumn is the time for our leaf study and while doing so Vito keeps calling the leaf's midrib as "stem". Instead of correcting, I decided to give him a proper lesson on the parts of a leaf. This is for him to know what each part is called and be able to understand how these parts function.
PARTS OF A LEAF Study for Kids: Introduction
A brief introduction to the parts of a leaf using my Montessori Inspired Parts of a Leaf 3 PART CARDS.
PARTS OF A LEAF Study for Kids: HANDS-ON IDENTIFICATION
After the 3 part cards presentation and work, we gathered some leaves in the neighborhood, pressed them to dry and then glued them on pieces of paper.
Using a stick paint, I made my son highlight the parts, one part for each leaf. This hands-on approach promotes retention. It also allows the child to thoroughly examine each part. Like when he was highlighting the margin, he noted that some leaves have spiky margins while others have straight smooth ones.
I highly recommend using stick paints rather than markers. They are more visible and easy to use on leaves.
PARTS OF A LEAF Study for Kids: LABELING
Vito completed this activity sheet, adding labels to our leaf diagram. This is part of our PARTS OF LEAF 3 PART CARDS.
If you own Montessori Lead Puzzle, you can use this too instead of the diagram. Have your child trace and color the puzzles (if they can assemble it already) then encourage them to write the labels.
You will find this PARTS OF A LEAF Learning Material in my shop here.
And that's about it! Simple and enjoyable activities your kids will surely love.
Happy learning!
