Purpose
In this post, I’m presenting how we are using it for static and dynamic subtraction. You will find my ADDITION POST here and ADDITION VIDEO DEMO here.
For What Age?
5 years and older.
STATIC SUBTRACTION
Static subtraction in Montessori is a form of subtraction wherein there's no need to regroup or exchange two quantities. Take a look at the example below to demonstrate how this works.
Let's get one command card and solve the equation. Here we have 659 - 348. You can describe this equation by mentioning that the minuend is 659, and the subtrahend is 348. Now, form the minuend by selecting the appropriate stamps and place them on the stamp game mat.
Once the stamps are put in place (starting from the unit category), move down the appropriate number of stamps representing the subtrahend; in this case, move down 8 units, 4 tens and 3 hundred.
Subtract it and record the answer on your slip. Count the units first, then tens, hundreds and so on (if applicable). Once the answer is written in the slip/equation card, read it out loud together with its answer.
DYNAMIC SUBTRACTION
Dynamic subtraction is used when the subtrahend's unit category is more than the unit category. Let's take, for example, 509 - 267. Again, name 509 as the minuend and 267 as subtrahend. Examine the equation with the child.
Form the minuend using the stamps, that's 5 hundreds, 0 tens and 9 units. Start subtracting the subtrahend by down the appropriate number of stamps starting from the units. That's 9 units - 7 units.
Then move to the tens, but there's 0 units, and you need to subtract 6 tens. To get MORE tens, we can exchange a hundred to 10 tens.
Take a hundred fand exchange it for 10 tens from the stamp game box. Be sure to return to the hundred stamp back into the box. Now that you have enough minuend in the tens category move down 6 tens to subtract the subtrahend. Continue working with the hundreds category.
Count the remaining tiles. Count from the units, then tens, hundreds and so on (if applicable). Once the answer is written in the slip/equation card, read it out loud together with its answer.
