Sharing with you our Leonardo da Vinco art projects. Took us a while to finish this unit as we have tons of Leonardo works to explore. Below, Vito offered to paint my portrait the Mona Lisa style.
RESOURCES
Picture books we read for this unit are:
Leonardo and the Flying Boy (Anholt). The book is about Leonardo da Vinci and his young apprentice Zoro. Here we learned that Leonardo was a great artist and a scientist, a sculptor, musician, and engineer! We learned that he keeps journals and writes backwards, such that you need a mirror to read what the writing says. In this book, Leonardo created a flying machine, and curious whether it can fly, Zoro and the other young apprentice secretly took it out one night for a try.
Leonardo da Vinci (Genius Series). If you are looking for biography style writing, then this book is for you! This book tells the real-life story of Leonardo da Vinci. It covers his birth, his apprentice work with Verrocchio till he settled in France. I love that timeline summary included in this book!
ACTIVITIES
For the study of Leonardo, you can do a lot of things and not limited to paint Mona Lisa. We worked on many stuff but focused on making catapults, making parachute, Leonardo's bridge (failed!) and painting a self-portrait.
I also printed some of Leonardo's famous works from our FAMOUS ARTIST PACK (set1).
Vito also enjoyed doing coloring works such as the one below as another extension activity.
We'll be moving to the Baroque period this soon, but if we continue to have sunny beautiful weather, we might pause on our Art History activities for a while to enjoy the outdoors.
Till then!
