DIY Posting Activities for Babies and Toddlers

Max was obsessed with these tubs at 13 months, the reason why I didn't provide him with so many toys and materials around this age.  

What's posting? In layman's terms, it's basically taking things in and out of a container.  It builds and strengthens their understanding of object permanence.  It also helps them develop fine motor skills, dexterity and hand-eye coordination.  I also find posting a great way to learn and explore vocabulary words like "in and out", stuck, fit, drop, empty, full etc.  

I made these four posting tubs with Max so he can play with them anytime on the shelf (but supervised) while we're in the sitting room.  I was so happy that it turned out to be non-stop play for him!! Each tub uses a different material for posting to provide levels of difficulty and practice different pencil grasp.

STICKS TUB

MATERIALS:  Empty clear plastic jar, craft sticks

The most challenging among the four due to the size of the hole, but this Max's favourite tub. He can play with this over and over again and for long period of time.  Be sure to supervise your toddlers at all times when you do this!

POMPOMS TUB

MATERIALS:  Empty clear plastic jar, pompoms (about 15.inch) or felt balls.

The same circular opening as the craft sticks except it's much bigger. This was the first tub I offered him, I bet the easiest among the four.

BUTTONS TUB

MATERIALS:  Empty clear plastic jar, large buttons (ours are from Grimm's Wooden Toys but couldn't find it in AmazonUS)

This is challenging for Max at first because he needs to position the button in a right orientation inorder to drop it.  So he needs to twist his hand in either vertical or horizontal to fit the buttons in the hole.

BLOCKS TUB

MATERIALS:  Empty clear plastic jar, cube blocks  or any wooden blocks available.

This is NOT a favourite. I'm not sure why, my hunch is that it's extra challenging for him to drop the cube in square hole.

These four tubs were the only set of "toys" he played around 13 months!
