Our Digestive System Learning Packet is finally up in our shop, and I'm so excited to share some of the details here with you! As usual, I made this for my elementary and high school kids, so this set is designed to be used by kids from upper elementary. The aim of this study is to:
- Understand the process of digestion
- Identify the organs taking part in the digestive system and know their functions
- The role of food and lifestyle in keeping our digestive system healthy
In a nutshell, I used the Powerpoint presentation of the packet as our guide during the discussion. I printed all the slides into cards (PDF format) and used a ring binder to secure the cards.
The Digestive System
Using the nomenclature cards introduced what's a digestive system and the network of organs comprising this system. The Montessori nomenclature cards include control cards, picture cards, label cards, definition cards and quiz cards. Use the control, picture and labels cards for younger students as matching/reading activities and add the definition /quiz cards for the older ones.
Vito laid out all the cards, including the definition cards. We didn't use the quiz cards until the last day of our science unit for review. This is how it looks when laid out.
How does Digestive System Work?
I use our diagrams to present how this system works. For a hands-on approach, we used some food samples and playdough to demonstrate the breakdown of food in the digestive system.
Examining the Stomach and Intestines
We further examine how the stomach, small intestine and large intestine work. We represent our food and chyme with playdough.
