I'm giving away the entire packet of our LETTER R TOTSCHOOL curriculum! Yes! You will finally have access to one of our totschool packets so you can try the activities with your kids!
Here's how we used it months ago when Max turned 2 years old.
LETTER OF WEEK: r
MAX is 24 months old.
Our letter of the week runs for at most 2 weeks. I don't have the time and energy to do it every week because I still have two big kids to care for. During the first week, we would try out the activities I designed for him and replace those activities (in the 2nd week) that don't interest him.
This is our shelf setup.
SOUND AND VOCABULARY
We prepared our letter r sound basket together by going around the house gathering objects that begin with the 'r' sound.
We placed this basket on our shelf with the letter r poster, letter sandpaper letter and My R Book. They are displayed on the shelf for easy access whenever Max wants to read and explore these materials.Another activity that he loved was playing memory games. This game aims to pair each picture while they are flipped/hidden. I love that this activity has improved Max's vocabulary!
LETTER RECOGNITION
Letter moveable alphabet matching the pictures. We do this by saying the letter 'r' sound and then placing the letter on the box beside a photo with the same beginning sound.
Uppercase and lowercase recognition. The activities don't capture Max's interest (as expected). I gave him these activities to test the waters, but as my instinct tells me, these don't suit him yet.
I also gave him this dot activity which he absolutely loves! He worked on three pages of letter r dots!
CENTERS: SHAPES
I included centre activities to add fun to our learning. Here Max is sorting the rocket shapes. I made use of our Melissa and Doug puzzle for this activity.
CENTERS: COUNTING
I prepared two activities for counting, and he enjoyed counting carrots for the rabbit farmer the most. At first, I only introduced two cards (counts 1 and 2), but he asked for more, so we counted up to four! I make use of playdough so we can "plant" our carrots into the counting mats.
These counting cards have pictures of objects beginning with the letter r, and we used them for practising 1:1 correspondence.
CENTERS: SIZE ORDERING
I cut out these rainbow cards and stuck them to our Grimms Nesting Boxes for Max to work on. It was a hit!
