The second part of our North American Study is looking at the plants and animals that thrive in it. If you missed the first part of our lesson which is about maps and flags , click here .

Most kids find this part of the unit the study exciting and more interesting!
1. Animals and Matching Cards. Though Mavi is old for this matching activity, he still find this interesting and would still request for it. So for his age group (elementary), aside from presenting matching cards (Animals of North America), I would make him read and work on the description cards. Here I am using animal figures from Safari Toobs (North American Wildlife, Desert, River, Arctic and Exotic Birds).
Our description cards contains information about each animal, what they eat and in what habitat they thrive. Mavi loves reading these cards and in effect we would end up having small discussions about the nature of the animals and on how we can protect them.
If you are curious, here’s a closer look to our animal fact cards, which you can get from our Animals of North America.
2. Animals and their Habitats. We are using my Animal Habitat learning materials for this part. We identify the different habitats/biomes of North America and categorize the animals for each habitats. Below are the images of biomes’ map that we are using and they are colour-coded.
I added stickers at the back of each animal pictures for control of errors.
3. Plants. This is an extension of our Plant Atlas learning material. I created a new set wherein the child (after learning about Plant Atlas) will identify the plants (pictures cards) based on the description in the sheet. Mavi enjoyed this activity. It’s his first time to encounter plants like tulip trees and the bristle-cone pine tree which he thinks look like a dinosaur plant. He wanted to see in real life the redwood trees, and see how gigantic these are.
I wanted to put velcro so the pictures will be secured once Mavi matched them to the description but I realized that I ran out This material is not yet in the shop, but will be available once I completed the other continents.
