Life Cycle of a Pumpkin (Preschool Edition)
Wednesday, October 12, 2016
We are seeing a lot of pumpkins and though we may not be able to visit a pumpkin patch, we brought home a couple of pumpkins for exploration. I would like to share this very beautiful layered puzzle that I purchased in Amazon. It’s the Life Cycle of a Pumpkin, beautifully crafted and illustrated. There’s a guide for each layer on the left side so the child will know what comes next.

I’d like to share Vito’s top picks of activities for October. These are the trays that he would select more often for “play”. Links to the materials are provided, and feel free to ask questions as well.

Introducing the Human Skeleton to Preschoolers
Wednesday, October 5, 2016
It’s that time of the year when my kids get to see a lot of human skeletons hanging everywhere! No wonder October is the best time to introduce the human skeleton to your kids. Vito is in the “what’s that” stage and he’s been asking me a lot of questions lately about these “funny” costumes and the hanging bones. So I gathered a few old and new learning materials for him so I can introduce these amazing body system.
Halloween Activities for Toddlers and {Learn & Play Link Up}
Wednesday, October 14, 2015
Halloween is just around the corner and we’re having the “feel” at home by working on some “halloweeny” activities. Here’s our working trays for the next few weeks:
TOP: tonging creep creatures, scooping black beans into pumpkin bags
MIDDLE: counting halloween objects using a pumpkin counter, letter matching using alphabet cards (all cards are from HALLOWEEN TODDLER PACK)
BOTTOM: pouring corn kernels, pumpkin face crafts
Practical Life Activities
Practical life activities are those building and improving skills that are of use in the daily life, like pouring, scooping, transferring etc. The benefits include hand-eye coordination and concentration. To know more about practical life activities, visit my post here and here.
Everything that involves the corn kernels and the black beans were a hit! Both Mavi and Vito played with it for long periods of time and I get to do chores while they’re messing around To save you a lot of work, always use trays, the bigger the better!
Numbers and Alphabet
As I mentioned earlier, I always integrate a little bit of counting and phonics into our daily activities. Vito is currently more into counting than the alphabets, so this counting cards that I made for him was a hit! He loves identifying the objects in the cards and counting them using the pumpkin counters.
An extra fun phonic game I included is discovering letters from the purse and matching them on the cards. Similar activity with the Alphabet Sensory Bin except that we’re using a purse this time and used both the upper and lowercase letters. The wooden letters used here were from Hape Uppercase and Lowercase Puzzle.

Pumpkins!
Friday, October 24, 2014
No, we’re not carving pumpkins this Halloween. First, I don’t have the tools and second, we have no space for them. So instead we painted pumpkins and stick them on the crystal window of my son as decors!
Halloween 2011
Tuesday, November 1, 2011
Growing up, we never had Halloween celebrations in the Philippines. And when we moved here, I couldn’t resist not to comply with their traditions. So to introduce the spirit of Halloween to my son, here’s a few of activities which we did last week. Promise that I will be more prepared next year.
Making pumpkin faces. I got the inspiration from here. Too bad we didn’t have a real pumpkin(out of stock) it would have been more fun.
Numbers and counters and sorting using Halloween foam stickers which I got with a whooping 50% off.
Lots of playdoh fun making monsters and this idea comes from Pink and Green Mama.
We also participated in our community’s Haunted Forest Walk which was held last Sunday (October 30) at MP. It was a family event and the boy was so happy to see lots of kids in costume. There was a long queue, but the line was moving so after around 15 minutes we entered the haunted forest.
And these are some of the sights my son enjoyed and recognized.
Hansel and Gretel’s bad witch. Farmers with pumpkin head... when he saw this he shouted “Pumpkin patch!”.
The spooky train which he didn’t find spooky at all. In fact he wanted to ride on it. And the giant eyeball, which he admires!
These bird skulls were the only thing that scared him. Look at how tight he hugged his Daddy!
On the left is a read giant spider with a man’s head. It crawls down from tree, thus the blurry picture. On the right is a Snow White’s stepmom mirror.
Then the next day we went Trick or Treat in our neighborhood. My boy had so much fun! He enjoyed meeting friends and receiving candies from our super nice neighbors.
We went with these nice girls. They like Mavi so much. They kept on laughing at him whenever he says “Happy Halloween” or “Thank You” and telling me that my son is so loud hahaha.
Post ‘trick or treat’ at home. I have to keep most these candies as we’re not allowing him to eat too much sweets.
Indeed a memorable Halloween for my boy. Till next time!
